Job Description:

DEFSEC is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Assistant Controller with 3-5 years of experience to join our finance team in this newly created role. The ideal candidate is a CPA student or graduate with a strong background in public accounting or experience at an accounting firm. The Assistant Controller will support the Controller in overseeing financial operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting, and maintaining compliance with regulatory standards.

This is an on-site position located in Kanata.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and managements’ discussion and analysis (MD&A) in accordance with IFRS 

  • Support the Controller in managing general ledger activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end close processes 

  • Analyze financial data to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for cost savings or process improvements 

  • Assist in the preparation and coordination of quarterly review, annual audit and SOX audit, working closely with external auditors to ensure compliance 

  • Maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure accurate financial reporting 

  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management processes 

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to provide financial insights and support business decisions 

  • Assist in implementing and improving accounting systems, processes, and procedures 

  • Supervise and mentor junior accounting staff as needed 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field 
  • CPA designation or actively pursuing CPA certification (preferred) 
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience, with at least 2 years in a public accounting firm or equivalent accounting firm experience 
  • Strong knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) 
  • Proficiency in ERPs and advanced Microsoft Excel skills 
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail 
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment 
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written 
  • Deadline and detail oriented 
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team 
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Canadian Security Clearance and Controlled Goods Program Clearance.  
  • Eligibility to work in Canada either as a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
